mike tyson talks about his life post849
When it comes to boxing, who better to learn from than one of the best fighters of all time, Mike Tyson. The goal is to watch, listen, and learn, absorbing as much information as possible. Tyson has been through it all – from being the youngest heavyweight champ ever, to filing bankruptcy, to making millions a second time around. His life experiences helped shape him into the man he is today, and now he is passing along his knowledge to others.
Mike Tyson is a household name – you might know him as an American former professional boxer or maybe by his cameo in the movie “The Hangover.” But he’s far more complex than any of these things alone.
Tyson had three fights in 1988. He faced Larry Holmes on January 22, 1988, and defeated the legendary former champion by KO in the fourth round. This was the only knockout loss Holmes had in 75 professional bouts.
A 2016 Youth World Championships gold medalist, Morrell turned pro in 2019. The Cuban beat Lennox Allen in 2020 for the interim WBA (Regular) super middleweight title and was later elevated to full-time champion in 2021. He has defended the belt five times, his last contest a knockout win in April against Yamaguchi Falcao. Morrell has won six fights in a row via knockout and has competed in The Armory five times.
I saw the development of many prospects, and as an Olympian myself, the “Night of the Olympians” in 2012 on ShoBox when Errol Spence Jr., Marcus Browne, Rau’shee Warren, Terrell Gausha, and Dominic Breazeale made their pro debuts together. 91 world champions eventually fought on ShoBox platform. One fighter every three shows went on to become a future world champ – that’s how important ShoBox was.
Tyson had his final professional win in 2003, a 49-second first-round knockout. Later that year he filed for bankruptcy, claiming to be $34 million in debt after earning an estimated $400 million over the course of his career. Tyson lost bouts in 2004 and 2005, box and he retired in the aftermath of the latter fight. In 2007 he served 24 hours in prison after pleading guilty to drug possession and driving under the influence, charges that stemmed from a 2006 arrest.
Etienne’s life tragically spun out of control in a way many feared Tyson’s would after he finished fighting. But at least Etienne got to share the ring with one of the most feared and famous heavyweights of any era – even if the whole event is mainly remembered for just how bizarre it all was.
Anthony Michael Hall, an actor and a friend of Tyson’s, said Tyson has “incredible intellect, and a great heart, and a wicked sense of humor — a lot of things people didn’t give him credit for — and it’s been great to see this new Mike emerge over the last 20 years.”
Under the guidance of Cus D’Amato, Mike Tyson’s boxing career began to flourish. D’Amato became not only Tyson’s trainer but also his legal guardian, providing him with the structure and discipline he needed to succeed. Tyson’s training regimen was rigorous, and he quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the boxing world.
Barry Tompkins: I liked Mayweather-Canelo – not so much because of the fight, which was anticlimactic, but for all the pre-fight hype. It was a fight that was talked about by everyone, not just boxing people. And ShoBox had so many memories and moments that I can’t point to anyone in particular. But over time you get to where you can tell who’s got the goods and who’s a pretender in a matter of minutes. Watching a young fighter take that big step from prospect to contender and then champion was truly satisfying.
When he moved to the United States on March 8, 2014, he had to manage and self-finance aspects of his life which had previously been handled by the Henan Provincial Combat and Weightlifting Center. Cooking for himself was the biggest challenge of his early days in the US. In his first few months as a professional, he spent more time learning how to properly cook noodles than he did working in the ring.
However, the fight did happen and Mike knocked out Clifford after just one round. “I was happy for Mike that he won, but I was also upset that I had trained him for eight weeks and I wasn’t a part of that win,” he said.
Today, he is a financially healthy family man and husband of fifteen years, a New York Times best-selling author who performed his own autobiography as a one-man Broadway show, the owner of one of the nation’s most successful celebrity cannabis brands, and a podcaster who gets really deep—and really high—with his guests. This late-life renaissance has led Tyson to take on an opponent he knows he can’t knock out but wishes to take the distance: Father Time.
Kiki says he doesn’t wake up at night anymore, not since the toad. Mike says he only smokes dope, never drinks or does anything harder, unless you count the occasional toad hit. He feels like a positive force in his family, in his business.
Mike Tyson’s story is a testament to the power of determination, dedication, and personal growth. While his journey may have had its ups and downs, one thing is for sure – his name will forever be etched in the annals of boxing history.
